As her exceptional athletic accomplishments attest, Kristi Yamaguchi has always believed in the power of dreams—and the power of hard work to make them come true. The Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion in women’s figure skating today remains a dedicated advocate of fitness and philanthropy.
Following her Olympic success, Kristi skated with the Stars on Ice tour for a decade and continued to compete and win professionally. She was inducted into the United States Olympic Committee’s Hall of Fame in 2005. In addition to the numerous awards and accolades she garnered throughout her career, she also won ABC’s Dancing with the Stars competition in 2008.
A prominent spokeswoman, Kristi has appeared in the “Got Milk?” ad series, endorsed Smart Ones dietary meals, and served as a Goodwill Ambassador at the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. She headlined her own NBC television special, Kristi Yamaguchi: Friends and Family, from 2003-2009 and was a correspondent for NBC’s Today Show during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Kristi also authored the inspirational book Always Dream as well as Figure Skating for Dummies; her children’s book Dream Big, Little Pig will be published in spring 2011.
In 1996, Kristi established the Always Dream Foundation, which supports children’s charities in her native northern California. Among other activities, the organization holds annual Christmas toy drives and hosts Olympic-themed camps for kids. Kristi is married to Bret Hedican, a retired NHL player who won the 2006 Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. The couple lives in the San Francisco Bay area with their two young daughters. |
